The Home STRETCH

I'm Not Ready To Go!

Last fall, I created a projected budget for the purpose of serving in South Africa for a year, including two round trip flights. Initially, I met my fundraising goal and headed off on my journey! Throughout my eight months in Cape Town, there have been several unexpected expenses, causing my initial fundraising to be insufficient to complete my year long commitment of teaching for Ubuntu Football Academy. The unforeseen expenses are as follows:

  • Since I was denied a long-term visa, I applied for two visitor extensions, which cost approx. $120 each. The first was approved, allowing me to stay through June. The second and most recent application was denied, which will force me to leave the country. I will purchase a flight out of South Africa for November 1st with plans to return with another visitor's visa to complete the school year with Ubuntu. I am budgeting $450 for traveling expenses, including round trip airfare and lodging.
  • My initial projected budget allotted $215/mo for rent and accommodation. The actual cost of rent has been about $250/mo, which is a $350 deficit for the total of ten months.
  • The final deficit comes from my car rental. Initially I was splitting both housing and my car rental with a roommate. After the first 3 months, it became evident that we both needed our own cars for more sustainability of a long-term stay. My projected rental cost was $200/mo. The actual rental cost has been $300/mo, causing a  $1000 deficit for the total of ten months.
All of this to say, I am asking for your support and partnership to finish my school year with Ubuntu and time in South Africa well. My initial fundraising goal did allow for unforeseen circumstances, however the extent of these costs is not in my budget. In order to complete the 2018 year serving in Cape Town, I am looking to raise $2,040 over the final three months. If I am unable to raise these funds, I will have to look at the possibility of returning to the States in November, leaving my classroom without a teacher for the fourth and final term of the school year. This is a circumstance that is hard to contemplate on a number of levels, but it is my hope and prayer that reaching out in faith to my community will allow for my continued service with Ubuntu.

If you feel lead to partner with me for the remainder of my time with Ubuntu, please click the tab labeled "donate." I have also included an option to donate on a monthly basis for my last three months! Thank you so much for your time, enthusiasm, and support. This year has been one of remarkable growth and change in my life, as well as the lives of the boys I am teaching, Without you, none of that would be possible.
